Intensive Physiotherapy Blocks

INTENSIVE BLOCKS AVAILABLE IN 2025 - REACH OUT NOW TO BOOK YOUR BLOCK!

What are intensive physiotherapy blocks?

Intensive blocks range from 1-3 weeks in duration and involve higher frequency and duration of physiotherapy sessions compared to regular weekly or fortnightly sessions.

There is research to support the use of intensive-style therapy interventions for children with neurological conditions such as cerebral palsy and other disorders which leave children with developmental delays.

Intensive therapy is designed to provide the optimal dosage of intervention to achieve maximum improvements and target neuroplasticity to create permanent improvements in function for children.

What does an intensive block involve?

An intensive block is designed specifically around your child’s goals and current presentation. We work very closely with families to develop goals for the intensive block and then develop a treatment plan to optimise improvements towards those goals.

On the first day of your intensive block, your child will be thoroughly assessed and videos will be taken to be used to determine the treatment plan for the intensive.

From the second day onwards, the focus will shift towards intervention and this may involve any of the following components:

  • Isolated muscle strengthening in the Universal Exercise Unit (UEU)

  • Functional part-task or full-task practice using Spider in the UEU

  • Sensory integration strategies

  • Neurodevelopmental facilitation

  • Use of garments such as the TheraTogs

  • Gait re-training using the treadmill

What happens after my child's intensive?

Following your child’s intensive block you can obtain an intensive report which outlines the goals for the intensive, the initial assessment findings, examples of the intervention that was performed and then the final assessment results which may show emerging improvements in your child’s function.

You will also be provided with a home exercise program based on the intervention that worked well for your child throughout their intensive. The home exercise program will allow you to continue to work towards maximising your child’s potential following the intensive and consolidate any improvements they have made.

How often should my child attend intensive blocks?

The answer to this question is different for each child depending on their physical presentation, age, and funding status. Generally speaking however, it is clinically recommended that children attend intensive blocks approximately every 3-4 months to maximise results.
